In the eighth inning of the Pirates’ loss on Sunday afternoon, Evan Meek was hit in the right arm by a line drive by Ryan Braun.
Meek immediately fell to the ground, wincing in pain. Manager John Russell and the Pirates medical staff helped Meek up but Evan was noticeably favoring his right hand.
“That ball got to me so fast, I had no time,” Meek said.
At first glance it looked as if the ball had hit Meek in the chest. Re-plays showed that he in fact pulled his arms up to his chest and the ball hit off his right wrist.
X-Rays came back negative, and showed no fracture. Meek is listed as day-to-day.
“Not being broken is the big thing,” Meek said. “We’ll just ice it. Hopefully, the swelling goes down, and I’ll get back out there soon.”
“He’ll be day to day,” manager John Russell said. “Just a contusion. He’s going to be pretty sore for a few days, get the swelling out of it. But the great news is that there’s no fracture.”
The Pirates are very lucky to have not lost their All-Star pitcher for the rest of the season.
Asked if he felt lucky, Meek said “Yeah, I do. Had my hand not been in the way, I don’t know if it would have been high enough ? I’m just glad it wasn’t at my face. We had some instances earlier in the year of guys getting hit. It’s not fun. It’s just not fun.”
