Good outing by Burres, but was it enough to stay in the rotation?

Brian Burres pitched a very good game for the Pirates on Monday. He limited the Braves to just five hits through six innings on one run and struck out three.

Burres took a good oppurtunity and ran with it. He started in place of Jeff Karstens who is having shoulder fatigue. But was it enough to stay in the rotation the remainder of the season?

“He made a pretty strong statement today,” Bucs manager John Russell said. “We’ll look at it as we go forward, but he made a pretty strong statement to get an opportunity to start.”

It was Burres first start for the Pirates since May 29th and is now 3-3 on the season after getting the win.

When asked if Brian had a preference to start he said, “Really, I just want to pitch whenever they’d like me to pitch. Yeah, I’ve been a starter, I enjoy being a starter, but whatever they need me to do, I’d be happy to do it.

“[Today], I was just trying to go out there and stay as focused as I could, one hitter at a time, one pitch at a time. I really wasn’t trying to think of what could happen after this if I had a bad start.”
