Doumit stays in the lineup

Since Chris Synder was acquired from the Diamondbacks, Ryan Doumit’s future was not looking so bright. He took the news hard, of course, when management decided that Doumit would be the back-up catcher to Synder.

Now, 36 days later, Doumit continues to remain in the Pirates lineup. He has started 30 of the past 36 games since Chris came over.

The only reason I can think of would be for trade bait.

And might I say, he is making himself more valuable. In his past 11 games, he is batting .361 with two home runs and seven walks. Even Doumit’s defense has improved behind the plate, and he doesn’t look as horrible in right field either.

“Ryan’s responded well, swinging the bat, and I think we’ve got a pretty good combo now with him and Chris back there,” manager John Russell said. “It is a juggling act at times, but Ryan … I think he’s played really hard these last few weeks, really gotten after it. I’m happy for him, I really am.”

In my mind, all I hear is: Trade bait, trade bait. Keep on hitting Doumit.

“In my mind, I’m an everyday player. I’ve always been that,” Doumit said. “It’s awesome that it’s worked out for me like this, but it’s what I expecteed. It’s nice playing the outfield. It’s easier on the body, on the legs, on the head. It’s an easier position, less demanding than catcher. And I’ve been enjoying my time out there.”

Synder is guarenteed $5.75 M for next year, Doumit $5.1.
