Pirates rumored to be interested in Overbay
Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports that the Pirates are interested in Lyle Overbay.
Sources say Pirates and free agent Lyle Overbay have been talking. Not clear if they are making progress on a deal.
First baseman Overbay, who will be 34 in January, batted .243 with 20 home runs and 67 RBI last season. He is a career .274/.358/.447 hitter.
Overbay is a better defender than a hitter, but then again it could have been cavernous Rogers Centre that made him look a bit timid while with the Jays.
He is a guy who might be within the Pirates budget who also is a team player and not isolated on 1B island like so many other MLB first baseman.
Could be a great addition to the building block’s Hurdle is now assembling for 2011.

I like that Overbay is a good defender but don’t like that he is only a first baseman. The Pirates could always split time at first and right field with Garrett Jones, Matt Diaz and Overbay. It’s just “talk” right now. I’m not sure if he is an upgrade over Jones though.
