Four run 3rd hurts Correia in Bucs 6-3 loss to Nats
Fresh off a complete game win against the Brewers, the Washington Nationals rallied off right-hander Kevin Correia for a four run 3rd to beat the Bucs, 6-3 at PNC Park on Easter Sunday.
Andrew McCutchen leadoff the 1st with a double (his forth of the season) off the right field wall. McCutchen advanced to third on a ground out by Jose Tabata and scored on a RBI single by Neil Walker to left to take a 1-0 lead.
Correia threw a 1-2-3 1st inning. After allowing back-to-back singles in the 2nd, with one out he escaped out of the jam by getting two ground outs.
Unfortunately for Correia, he was unable to escape the 3rd inning cleanly. Back-to-back singles by Jason Marquis and Danny Espinosa with a six pitch walk to Rick Ankiel loaded the bases with no outs.
Jayson Werth grounded to Pedro Alvarez at third base, who threw home to get the force out. Adam LaRoche grounded to first base, scoring Espinosa and trying the game at 1.
It didn’t stay tied for long, as Michael Morse took a fastball into the left field seats for a three-run homer, giving the Nats a 4-1 lead.
Correia told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, It was just one of those that got away at the wrong time. I was trying to throw a fastball in and it didn’t move like I wanted it to. That guy is dangerous, and I know that. You can’t miss over the plate. It just wasn’t what I was expecting out of the pitch.”
Correia allowed another hit before getting Jerry Hariston (the eighth man to come to the plate) to ground out and end the inning.
Garrett Jones drew a leadoff walk and Pedro Alvarez doubled in the 4th. Chris Snyder hit a sac fly and Ronny Cedeno singled. The two runs brought the Bucs within one run.
Former Bucco Adam LaRoche homered off Coreia in 5th to give the Nationals a 5-3 advantage.
Correia was charged with five runs on 11 hits with one walk and two strikeouts over 4.2 innings (84 pitches).
The score remained the same until the 8th when the Nationals tacked on another run, a RBI double by Laynce Nix.
McCutchen told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, “We felt like we were in the game the whole time today. We just weren’t able to get those few extra runs.”
The Pirates drop to 9-12 on the season. They will face the Nationals on Monday for the rubber match of the series.
Pregame News and Notes: Nationals @ Pirates 4/24
The Washington Nationals (9-10) will face the Pittsburgh Pirates (9-11) at PNC Park today at 1:35 PM ET. Right-hander Jason Marquis will start for the Nats against righty Kevin Correia.
Marquis picked up his first win of the season against the Brewers during his last start. He allowed two runs on nine hits over seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
Correia is coming off of four-hit complete game against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed two runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
News and Notes:
- Veteran pitcher Livan Hernandez reportedly companied after his start yesterday that the Pirates did not notify him in enough time to warm up –hence why he gave up five runs in the first inning. The game was scheduled to start at 7:05 PM but didn’t start until 8:16 because of a rain delay.
Hernandez told Colin Dunlap of the Post-Gazette, “The other pitchers were there already. How? I think they knew before.”
He then went on to say: “It’s not normal. They’ve got to let us know about the time.”
Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reported that the press box and stadium was informed of the 8:15 start time 30 minutes prior.
- Right-hander Evan Meek has thrown six scoreless innings of relief. In fact, the Pirate bullpen as a whole has been dominant. Root Sports reported that the Bucs bullpen has a 0.90 ERA in the last 20 innings.

Pre-game News and Notes: Pirates @ Marlins 4/19
The Pittsburgh Pirates (8-8) will open up a three-game series against the Florida Marlins (8-6) tonight at7:05 PM ET in Miami, Fla.
Left-hander Paul Maholm (0-2, 2.33 ERA) will face righty Josh Johnson (2-0, 1.35 ERA)
Maholm has had three strong starts for the Pirates, but has had little run support during his outings. Maholm has allowed just five runs over 19.1 innings this season. During his last start against the Brewers, Maholm allowed two runs to score in the first but then tossed six scoreless frames after. He allowed four hits with three walks and six strikeouts over seven innings. Maholm is 3-4 with a 4.89 ERA in seven career starts against the Marlins.
Johnson had a no-hitter going until giving up a hit to the Braves Freddie Freeman with one out in the 8th inning. He’s allowed just three earned runs in three starts this season (20 innings).
News and Notes:
- Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan has not been comfortable throwing his slider this season, but despite that, he has still managed to pick up five saves.
Hanrahan told Kevin Goheen of MLB.com, “If something’s not working, you still have to figure out a way to get guys out. Sometimes you just make things up when you’re out there. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but for me, it comes back to believing in it and trusting in it.”
Hanrahan has allowed three runs on 11 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts over nine innings (eight appearances) this season.
- Kevin Correia’s complete game on Monday’s 9-3 win to the Cincinnati Reds was the second of his career. His other complete game came on September 25, 2009 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
- It also marked the second complete game by a Bucs starter in the past four games (Charlie Morton, the other). The Pirates had just one complete game in 2010 (Paul Maholm). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the first season for the Pirates to have more than one complete game win in April since 1992 –the last year the Pirates had a winning record.
- Seven different players (Jose Tabata, Matt Diaz, Steve Pearce, Chris Snyder, Neil Walker, Lyle Overbay and Ronny Cedeno) had at least two hits in last night’s 9-3 victory over the Reds.
- The Pirates took three of four from the Reds –the first series win in Cincinnati since 2008.
- They also have won three straight road series for the first time since April in 2002. The Bucs have won seven of 10 games on the road this season.
- Pedro Alvarez is back in the lineup tonight after given the day of on Monday. Alvarez is batting just .193 on the season. Known for his slow starts to the season, Alvarez has been working extensively with hitting coach Gregg Ritchie and Manager Clint Hurdle.
Manager Clint Hurdle told Kevin Goheen of MLB.com, “We’re just trying to help him find his way back to finding some consistency on offense. His recovery period hasn’t been what you would want at this level. Every hitter is going to go through some periods when they’re down and their stroke’s not right, but what creates separation at this level is the recovery time. You want it to be shorter than longer, and there’s been some length to this.”

Correia throws complete game in 9-3 road win
The Pirates bats –which combined for 15 hits — and the excellent pitching performance by Kevin Correia combined for a 9-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on Monday.
Right-hander Kevin Correia threw a four hit complete game for the Bucs. He allowed three runs with two walks and five strikeouts while picking up his third win of the season.
What’s most impressive is the fact that the second hit came in the 8th inning. Before giving up the hit to Paul Janish, Correia retired 15 batters in a row.
Correia allowed a two-run homer in the bottom of the 9th –the only earned runs he allowed and needed just 109 pitches for the complete game.
Kevin Correia told Kevin Goheen of MLB.com, “I threw a lot of fastballs. You obviously want as many runs as possible, but it’s hard to go up there and throw a lot of offspeed pitches and get behind guys when you have that big of a lead. I threw a lot of two-seam fastballs early, and I got people out early.”
The Pirates, for the second game in a row, got to the Reds starting pitcher early. Left-hander Travis Wood threw 42 pitches in the 1st and allowed three runs to score. Jose Tabata continued to show his patience at the plate and drew a seven pitch walk. Wood allowed four straight singles (Matt Diaz, Neil Walker, Steve Pearce and Chris Snyder) to put the Bucs up, 3-0.
Scott Rolen lead off the 2nd inning with a ground rule double to center field and then advanced to third on a passed ball by Chris Snyder. Third baseman Steve Pearce made a throwing error to first, scoring Rolen to cut the lead, 3-1.
10 men came to the plate to score five runs for the Bucs in the 4th. Snyder and Ronny Cedeno hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Correia hit a sac bunt to move the runners over to second and third base. Andrew McCutchen followed with a bases clearing double over the head of Jonny Gomes in left field.
Wood was chased from the game after throwing 84 pitches over 3.1 innings.
The Pirates didn’t stop there. Diaz and Pearce hit singles and Lyle Overbay doubled to give the Bucs a 8-1 lead.
Reliever Matt Maloney hit Diaz with the bases loaded in the 5th for a 9-1 lead.
Steve Pearce told Kevin Goheen of MLB.com, “Everybody was hitting and we were working the count. A lot of people weren’t missing the pitches. It was a good night all around for our team. We put up the runs and K.C. went out there and shut them down. That’s huge for a team when a pitcher goes out and shoves it right back down their throat and we go back to hitting.”
Jose Tabata added, “Everybody is coming here with a new mentality every day. They bring the same energy every day. You see that it’s different from last year. Everybody is focused. I trust my team, and I think this year is going to be a very good year for the Pirates.”
Correia continued to cruise through the Reds lineup allowed just his second hit in the 8th inning. After allowing Ramon Hernandez to single, he gave up a two-run home run to Chris Heisey in the bottom of the 9th.
Correia’s second career complete game marked the Bucs second in the past four games (the other, Charlie Morton). It also marked the first time since April of 2002 that the Pirates won three consecutive road series. The Bucs have won seven of their first 10 games on the road this season.
Pre-game News and Notes: Pirates @ Reds 4/18
The Pittsburgh Pirates (7-8) will face the Cincinnati Reds (9-6) for the fourth and final game of the series.
With the Bucs 7-6 wild victory last night, they are looking to win their third road series in as many tries. The last time the Pirates won three consecutive road series was in April of 2002 (Mets, Cubs, Brewers).
Right-hander Kevin Correia (2-1, 2.70 ERA) will start for the Pirates against left-hander Travis Wood (1-1, 3.86 ERA).
Correia suffered his first loss against the Brewers last start. After tossing five no-hit innings, Correia allowed four runs in the 6th (including a three-run homer to Prince Fielder). Correia has been solid for the Bucs so far this season. He allowed just two runs during his first two starts (13 innings). Correia has also pitched at least six innings in each of his first three starts this season.
Wood is coming off a no-decision in which he allowed just one run on five hits, over 6.2 innings against the San Diego Padres. His second start of the season, wasn’t as pretty. He allowed six earned runs over five frames against the Diamondbacks. Wood has pitched into the seventh in two of his three starts this season.
News and Notes:
- Ronny Cedeno’s bunt in the 8th inning of the Pirates 7-6 victory of the Reds’s was his idea. With runners on first and third, Cedeno bunted towards pitcher Logan Ondrusek, who fielded the ball and threw it to catcher Ryan Hannigan, to barely tag out a sliding Garrett Jones at home plate.
A controversial play that got twitter a buzzing.
Manager Clint Hurdle told Bill Brink of the Post-Gazette, “Actually if the bunt goes another foot, we’re safe. It didn’t go enough, the guy made a great play. We take chances.”
- As It was pointed out yesterday, Garrett Jones is swinging a hot bat as of late. Last night he continued to hit as he went 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and a walk.
Jones has been putting in extensive time with hitting Coach Gregg Ritchie and Manager Clint Hurdle to make a few adjustments on his swing.
Jones told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, “It’s all starting to come into place, feel better. I feel like I’m using my hands a lot better. I have hit some balls good the last few days and have had some good at-bats. I’m just going to try and keep that going, and keep that consistent. Every day I’m starting to feel better and where I want to be.”

Correia’s no-no turns bad as the Pirates lose 6-0 to Brewers
Right-hand pitcher Kevin Correia was cruising. After pitching five innings without allowing a hit and just two walks, things turned ugly in the 6th and 7th inning as the Pirates were shutout by the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-0 on Wednesday night at PNC Park.
Jonathan Lucroy doubled to the North Side Notch in the top of the 6th, to break up Correia’s no-no. And from there, the Brewers scored four runs in the inning, including a three-run homer by Prince Fielder.
The Brewers tacked on two more runs in the 7th. Mark Kotsay reached base on an error by Third baseman Pedro Alvarez. Former Bucco Nyjer Morgan pinch ran for Kotsay and was driven in by a double hit by Yuniesky Betancourt. Morgan tackled Ryan Doumit at the plate and Betancourt advanced to third during the play at the plate. Shaun Marcum grounded to short, scoring Betancourt to give the Brewers a 6-0 lead.
Correia was charged with six runs (four earned) over six innings with two walks and one strikeout and picked up his first loss of the season.
Righty Shaun Marcum also flirted with a no-hitter through four innings. He didn’t allow a base runner until Lyle Overbay broke up the no-no in with a lead off single to right field in the 5th. Pedro Alvarez followed with a single, but were left stranded.
Marcum pitched seven shutout innings with one walk and four strikeouts. The four hits by the Pirates came off of Marcum. The Brewers bullpen held the Pirates hitless the final two innings.
The Pirates have lost three games in a row and have dropped to 5-6 this season –the first time this year the club has been under .500.
Brewers @ Pirates 4/12: Postponed by rain
Tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers was postponed due to rain. The Pirates have not yet announced when it will be made up.
- The pitching match up for the next two games versus the Brewers are as follows:
Wednesday, April 13th: Right-hand pitcher Shaun Marcum vs. Righty Kevin Correia
Thursday, April 14th: Left-hand pitcher Randy Wolf vs. Lefty Paul Maholm
- The Pirates announced that right-hander Jeff Karstens will take Ross Ohlendorf’s (15-day disabled list) spot in the rotation on Friday in Cincinnati –at least for one turn, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune.
- Evan Meek threw on the side on Monday and told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com that he expects to be ready to go on Wednesday.
- Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com also reports that both Chris Snyder and Joe Beimel are just a few days away from being with the big league club.
Snyder (lower back) has caught five straight games with the Bradenton Marauders and has not had any back soreness that sidelined him this spring.
Beimel (left elbow) threw again today, marking the first time he has thrown on back-to-back days this year. In the two appearances, Beimel faced the minimum (six) with three strike outs.
Manager Clint Hurdle said the club wants to see how Beimel feels tomorrow before the decide his next step.

Fans with tickets to Tuesday’s game are free to exchange those tickets to any Sunday through Thursday home game this season, expect the June 5 game against the Phillies and the June 26 one against the Red Sox.
Pre-game News and Notes 4/12: Brewers @ Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates (5-5) will open up a three game series against the Milwaukee Brewers (5-5) tonight at 7:05. Right-hand pitcher Kevin Correia will face Righty Shaun Marcum.
Correia out dueled Chris Carpenter during his last start pitching a seven inning shutout, limiting the Cardinals to just five hits while walking two and striking out three. Correia has been the Bucs most consistent starter this season. He even pitched an inning of relief during Friday’s 14-inning marathon game. Correia has allowed two earned runs over two starts (three appearances), 14 innings.
Marcum allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings against the Atlanta Braves his last start. Marcum is still working on his command after missing his next-to-last spring start with a stiff shoulder.
- The Pirates were 5-13 against the Brewers last season (3-6 at PNC Park).
- Eight of the Bucs 10 games have been decided by two-runs or less.
- The Pirates started the season with 10 consecutive days with out a day off. After having Monday off, the Bucs will play 13 straight games until they get another off day (4/25).
News:
- Brad Lincoln was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and was optioned to Triple-A on Monday according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.
- Lefty Joe Beimel (left elbow) has made two rehab appearances (on back-to-back days) for Triple-A Indianapolis. He has retired all six batters he’s faced with three strikeouts.
- Andrew McCutchen has been ranked as the No.1 Center Fielder by MLB Network. But is he a 5-took player just yet? Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette dives into the argument.
- Shortstop Ronny Cedeno has been very inconsistent. We’ve seen him make amazing plays, and we’ve also seen him bobbled a routine grounder. The Pirates believe he has the tools to become a good major league shortstop and are not giving up on him just yet.
General Manager Neal Huntington told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, “Part of the reason why we continue to give him the opportunity is that if it clicks, we’ve got a pretty good Major League shortstop. In the interim, we’ve got a Major League shortstop. Whether we like it or not, he’s not as far behind the average shortstop that you might like to feel he is and he makes you feel he is sometimes.”
“You look tools-wise, he can run, throw, hit and hit for power,” Huntington said. “He can do a lot of things that Major League shortstops can’t do. They just are more consistent. If we can get him to be consistent, we’ve got a pretty good player. It’s a big year for Ronny Cedeno.”

Three run 8th costly for Bucs, lose 6-4 to Rockies
The Colorado Rockies broke open a tie game in the 8th inning after scoring three runs off of Jose Veras, as they went on to beat the Pirates, 6-4.
After a leadoff walk to Jonathan Herrera and a single to Carlos Gonzalez, Veras struck out the next two Rockies in a row. Jose Lopez was hit by a pitch to load to the bases and former Bucco Ty Wigginton came to the plate.
Wigginton took the first pitch down the left field line for a bases clearing double to give the Rockies a 6-3 lead.
Veras told Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune, “I tried to come in and set up my breaking ball, maybe (get) a broken-bat rollover. That was the pitch that cost me the game.”
Right-hander Charlie Morton made his second start of the season on Saturday. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with five walks and one strikeouts over seven innings (92 pitches).
Morton told Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune, “If the plate was moved over a foot toward the right-hander’s batter’s box, I’d be in a lot better shape. I wasn’t spraying balls everywhere. I was missing down and in to righties and away to lefties.”
Morton got off to a shaky start in the first inning. He allowed a lead off walk to Dexter Fowler, who stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Ryan Doumit. Morton walked the next batter, Herrera to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Gonzalez hit into a 6-4-3 double play but Fowler scored to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. Morton got Troy Tulowitzki to fly out to escape the inning.
Morton threw 17 pitches in the inning, just five for strikes.
Lyle Overbay hit a lead off double off of right-hander Greg Reynolds in the 2nd. Two batters later, Ryan Doumit hit a two-run homer to right center to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead. The homer marked Doumit’s 48th as a Bucco. He is now tied with Smoky Burgess and Manny Sanguillen for fourth place on the club’s all-time homer list.
The Rockies tied the game at 2 in the 3rd inning after Morton allowed walking Fowler (for a second time in as many innings) and a RBI single by Gonzalez.
Jose Lopez homered off Morton in the 6th to put the Rockies back on top, 3-2.
The Pirates tied the game back up at 3 after Matt Diaz hit a RBI single to score Ryan Doumit.
The Rockies blew the game open in the 8th after three runs scored off of Jose Veras.
Jose Tabata hit a solo-home run in the bottom of the 8th inning to cut the lead to, 6-4, and extend his hitting streak to nine games. Tabata also hit a home run during last night’s game.
Kevin Correia pitched the 9th inning for the Bucs. He needed just nine pitches to retire the side.
The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the inning after both Matt Diaz and Jason Jaramillo singled, but Steve Pearce hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Ohlendorf DL; McCutchen recalled; Injury updates
- Right-hander Ross Ohlendorf was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday afternoon with right shoulder posterior strain. Ohlendorf exited Friday’s game in the 3rd inning after experiencing some discomfort.
Ohlendorf told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, “I don’t think it will take as long [to heal] as last time. I feel much better than I did last year when I got hurt.”
“It’s frustrating, but at this point, I can’t really do anything about it except work to get back. Anytime you go on the DL, it’s tough. In the past, I really haven’t been hurt that much. It’s kind of surprising and frustrating.”
- The Pirates re-called righty Daniel McCutchen from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill his roster spot.
- Due to the 14-inning, 5 hour game on Friday night, the Pirates are short arms from the bullpen for Saturday’s game.
Jeff Kartsens, Chris Resop and Garrett Olson are not able to pitch today due to the pitch counts from last night.
Mike Crotta is also unlikely due to pitching on back-to-back nights.
Evan Meek is unavailable to throw because of right shoulder tightness.
That leaves Joel Hanrahan, McCutchen and Jose Veras available from the bullpen.
Starters Paul Maholm and Kevin Correia could pitch an inning of work, if needed, since it’s their day to throw on the side.
- The Pirates have not announced who will fill the 3rd spot in the rotation for Ohlendorf.
Manager Clint Hurdle told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, “We don’t need to make a decision yet on that, so we’re just going to go TBA. We’ve got to see how everything plays out. We’ve got to get through the next two days, and then we’ll evaluate from there.”
- Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com also reports that Meek is feeling better, but will not throw until Tuesday for precautionary reasons.
Meek did throw long toss on Saturday.
He told Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, “I’m still not feeling quite 100 percent. The whole point right now is just [that] there’s no point in throwing me out there and risking something happening where it’s going to take me a week or two weeks to come back. It’s not something that’s serious, but it is something that they want to give me a few extra days.”
- Right-hand pitcher Brad Lincoln will be making the start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday, not High-A Bradenton, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
Lincoln will be filling in for Daniel McCutchen, who the Pirates re-called from AAA earlier today.
Lincoln is rehabbing a right forearm contusion. He was struck in the arm by a line drive by the Phillies Jimmy Rollins late in the spring.
He is scheduled to throw about four innings (65 pitches).
