Pirates @ Cardinals 7/30, and other News

Cardinals Starting Lineup:

Lopez 3B

Jay RF

Pujols 1B

Holliday LF

Rasmus CF

Molina C

Ryan SS

Carpenter (11-3, 3.09) RHP

Schumaker 2B

Pirates Starting Lineup:

McCutchen CF

Tabata LF

Walker 2B

Jones 1B

Alvarez 3B

Milledge RF

Cedeno SS

Kratz C

Karstens (2-6, 4.72 ERA) LHP

Andrew McCutchen is back in the lineup tonight, after electing to sit out yesterday’s game in Colorado due to a sore right shoulder. (He missed six games last week with a sprained right ACJoint and re-aggravated it Tuesday)

  • (Via Scott McCauley, Triple-A Indy’s Radio Broadcaster) Mitch Jones who was in Triple-A Gwinnett has been acquired by the Pirates for cash considerations. He will join Indy Indians in Norfolk.

Mitch Jones hit .250, 18HR, 45RBI in 89 games w/ Gwinnett -Braves. .292 OBP/.494SLG

In 2009 Jones played eight games with the Dodgers, .308 AVG, 4-for-13, 1 2B, 6K

  • (Via Jenifer Langosh, Pirates MLB Reporter) Daniel McCutchen has left Triple-A team to join Pirates in STL; not yet officially named Saturday’s starter as roster move still needed.
  •  There are a lot of conflicting reports on Paul Maholm (Dodgers, Mets and Padres are ”interested”) DJ Carrasco, Javier Lopez, Joel Hanrahan have also been acquired about. With less than 24 hours left of the deadline, thinks could get interesting.

The streak lives on (Pit @ Oak)

Bucco’s lose. 5-0. The streak continues. That’s 16 straight losses on the road. The last time that happened in bucco history? 1914 (Sept 5-Sept 26) It’s also the 8th time the Pirates have been shutout this season.

Daniel McCutchen took the mound (he was recalled by AAA Indy) He had a decent start, not good, not great. If I were to grade him I’d say a C.

He went 6IP 4H 4ER 2BB 2K

Cahill was a different story. He struck out a career high, 10. Gave up only 2 hits, 3BB through 7 2/3 innings. Cahill is also the 1st A’s Pitcher in the past 2 yeras with 7 + IP shutout & 10 K’s (The last guy? Rich Harden 6/26/08)

Barton went 3-4, 4RBI

Crisp 2-3, BB, SB, 3R

On a much brighter note, atleast they looked pretty sweet. And by that, I mean the uni’s. It was throwback night in Oakland and both teams worse 70′s uniforms. They are by far my favorite of the throwbacks in a while.

There is an update on Neil Walker. After spending the night at the hospital for precautionary reasons he was diagnosed with a concussion. He was (obviously) out of the lineup last night, and will be out the lineup possibly the remainder of the road trip. Walker will fly with the team to Chicago sunday and to Pittsburgh Monday to be examined by team doctors. Thankfully it was just a concussion, it could have been much worse.

It was “basically a mild concussion,” Walker said. Other than the headache and fatigue from lack of sleep in the hospital, he feels OK. He underwent a CT scan, blood tests and had his blood pressure checked every hour.

“I don’t remember getting hit,” Walker said, still wearing his hospital ID tag and joking that, “Fortunately, Church has soft knees.”

Minor league update:

  • Scott McCauley (AAA Indy’s annoucer) told me via twitter regarding Aki “he’s here, just not in the Indians lineup. In BP Aki hit some serious HR’s. He took ground balls at 3B”

Aki has yet to start since arriving on Friday.

  • Brandon Moss hit a HR last night. If your counting that is 3 in his last 15 AB. He is 8 for his last 15 with 8RBI.
  • Indianapolis beat Toledo 6-4. Negrych went 1-3, HR (3) and is batting (.404)
  • Altoona lost to Bowie, 4-2. Alderson went 1.2IP 5H 4ER 2K 1BB
  • Bradenton lost to Jupiter 4-3. Grossman went 2-4 with a triple, and a R.
  • West Virgina lost to Greensboro 3-2. Brito 1-4, double, run
  • State College won 9-8 over Batavia. Santos 2-4, HR, 2R

As you know, Alex Pressley was promoted to AAA a few days ago. But just who is this Alex? Check out Rocco DeMaro’s blog to find out. “A Mystery Player Evaluation”

Today’s Pitching Matchup:

Ross Ohlendorf                           vs                           Gio Gonzalez

0-6 5.43 ERA                                                            6-5 3.89 ERA

Ohlendorf- Still winless this season. (Yes, you heard that right.) He has held opponents to a .203 AVG the 1st time through the order. The 2nd & 3rd time through? The opponents are batting .341.

Gio- His last start against the Reds was a beauty. He threw 7 innings. Gave up 1ER 4H 1BB and 9K (season high) At home this season Gonzalez is 4-2 with a 2.47 ERA (7 Starts) Lefties be scared. They are only hitting .145 against him.

I heard this quote yesterday. “You win 60 and you loose 60, it’s what you do with the other 42 that makes the difference.” At this rate, I hope the Pirates win 60 games. It has not been a very pretty year. :-(

  • Oh, the power of the Stash. Carl Pavano of the Twins is the 1st AL Pitcher with a CG shutout and 2 + hits at the plate since Clyde Wright on 9/14/1972 (against TEX)

As you guys know, I think there is nothing more funny then when baseball players grow staches throughout the season.

Here is a look at some of my favorites:

I am Ron Burgandy?? (haha I couldn’t help myself!)

DJ Carrasco had a nice one going when the Pirates were all growing them out. But I can’t find a picture anywhere. Boo.

 Who’s Hot?

  • Mets Starting Pitching

Since May 17th they are a combined 17-4 with a 2.76 ERA

R.A Dickey           Mike Pelfrey        Jonathon Niese        Johan Santana

6-0 2.33 ERA        6-1 2.38 ERA       3-0 3.25 ERA          2-3 3.25 ERA

  • James Loney (last night against the Yankees) tied a season high 4 RBI. He leads the club with 51 RBI’s.

Who’s Not?

  • Russell Martin. In his last 10 games he is batting .143 with 3RBI and 10BB. 1 for his last 21.

Anyone watch the Yankee/Dodger game yesterday? My highlight for sure was when Tommy Lasorda and Reggie Jackson were in the press box. (Im a HUGE TL fan!) It was very entertaining to hear them fight. Tommy still upset over that play at 3B. Reggie mad about a TL vmail saying something about “only Dodgers fans get into heaven” It was hilarous.

  • Aj Burnett has been struggling as of late. Since Dave Eiland’s leave of absence he has gone 0-4 with a 10.35 ERA. 9HR allowed in 20 innings. With Eiland: 6-2 3.28 ERA. Only 4HR in 71 2/3 innings.

Here is what he had to say about his recent struggles:

“I’m out there throwing pitches, whether Dave’s in the dugout or not. He’s corrected me enough where I should have a memory of what Dave says. I’m a man, I’m a professional athlete who’s got a big contract, who’s here for a reason.”

Sporting News Magazine Baseball Predictions

pred1.JPG

pred2.JPG

Sorry, the pictures are a little blurry. Sporting News Magazine’s Baseball 2010 issue came out. Thoughts on the World Series? I sure hope they are wrong. I don’t want to see NYY vs PHI again!

Other Highlights from the magazine:

  • Five Fearless Forecasts:
  1. There will be one heck of a Hall of Fame class in 2016. -The Players likely to retire after this season include Ken Griffey Jr, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Jim Thome, Andy Pettitte, & Gary Sheffield.
  2. The 600 Homer club will welcome a new member. -Yankees 3rd Baseball Alex Rodriguez needs 17 homeruns to become the seventh player to reach 600. He has hit at least 30 in each of the past 12 seasons.
  3. Minnesota will regret not putting on a rectractable roof on new Target Filed. -Outdoor baseball is great as long as it isn’t played in football weather.
  4. Bobby Cox will leave by himself. -Of the four 60 and over Hall of Fame managers, this will be the last season for only Cox. He has already annouced that 2010 will be his swan song. Look for Tony La Russa, Jim Leyland, and Joe Torree to all return in 2011.
  5. Three streaks are sure to extend. -First, Cardinals 1st baseman Albert Pujols will again hit at least .300 with 30 homers and 100 RBIs for the 10th consecutive season. Second, Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki will finish with atleast 200 hits for the 10th straight year and, finally, the easy one: The cubs won’t win the World Series for the 102nd consectutive time.

(Note: They didn’t say anything about the Pirates extending the loosing streak to 18!!! Could this be the year they finally break it?)

  • American League:

East:

  1. Yankees- They have a ton of money to spend, but give them credit for spending it on the right players.
  2. Red Sox- Their talent is tick below New York’s but still superior to every other team in the AL.
  3. Rays- The best third place team in baseball. Too bad that won’t earn Tampa Bay a spot in the postseason.
  4. Orioles- Baltimore is heading in the right direction, but this is a deep hole it’s trying to escape.
  5. Blue Jays- Cutting payroll in this division is a recipe for a last place finish.

Central:

  1. Twins- Minnesota fans are fired up for outdorr baseball. Let’s see what they say about it in October.
  2. White Sox- Their rotation should be the best in the division, but their lineup is lacking.
  3. Tigers- Detroit has rookies penciled in for a second base and center field. That will make a contending a challenge- even in this division.
  4. Royals- They were a trendy pick to suprise last season and lost 97 games. Such expectations won’t be a problem in 2010.
  5. Indians- Cleveland will spend this season paying for the financially driven departures of Cliff Lee, Victor Martinez, and CC Sabathia.

West:

  1. Angels- They lost a lot in the offseason but still have Mike Scioscia. And Torri Hunter. And Jered Weaver. And Kendry Morales. And more.
  2. Mariners- It’s great to see the Northwest so excited about baseball. With a break or two, the buzz could last into the playoffs.
  3. Rangers- They will be better than this if Rich Harden and Josh Hamilton stay helath and their young starters progress. That is too many “ifs” though.
  4. A’s- All their good young pitching is lacking in one important area: offensive support.

  • National League

East:

  1. Phillies- The NL’s most potent lineup will be even better with Placido Polanco’s ability to play smart ball.
  2. Braves- Bobby Cox’s final season will be a good one, thanks to a rotation as strong as any in the game.
  3. Mets- Improved health, more than offseason pickups, will help make them a winner agian.
  4. Marlins- They will have a bunch of good young players who will somehow keep the team in contention. In other words, business as usual.
  5. Nationals- Stephen Strasburg’s arrival will bring excitment but won’t keep Washington from a third consecutive 100 loss season.

Central:

  1. Cardinals- As long as they have Albert Pujols, they have the edge. Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright don’t hurt, either.
  2. Cubs- New ownership means new hope, but Mr. Ricketts can’t play right field or lead off.
  3. Brewers- New pitching coach Rick Peterson will help, but he doesn’t have enough talented arms with which to work.
  4. Reds- Dusty Baker, in the final year of his contract, needs a fast start to avoid becoming the first manager on the hot seat.
  5. Unfortunately, new manager Brad Mills couldn’t bring some of the talent he worked with as the Red Sox’s bench coach.
  6. Pirates- Extending their record losing streak to 18 season is as certain as their trading of veteran players. (ANNDDD there is it! :-(

West:

  1. Rockies- With practically the entire team returning and Jim Tracy in charge from the start, they should continue to prosper.
  2. Dodgers- A messy ownership situation is a distraction, but LA still has as many up and coming stars as any club.
  3. Giants- Great pitching would carry the team in October, too bad they don’t have enough offense to make it there.
  4. Diamondbacks- The return of Brandon Webb and Conor Jackson will make them better, just not good enough.
  5. Padres- You know a team is in big trouble with you can’t name more than three of its regulars.
